Robert and Katie had seen the panic erupt from the demon army. When the right flank broke and tried to head to the South, Robert screamed, “Don’t let them escape!” His warriors rushed in and hacked them to pieces, turning the rest back, but they had nowhere to go.

Before the battle started, the cracked blacktop could still be seen in many places, where it wasn’t overgrown with weeds or dirt. Now, the black had turned red, and the cracks were overflowing with the blood of the dead. Bodies were piled everywhere. Some were whole, but most were missing their appendages as they spread out across the field like noodles in a blood-soup.

Katie used the bloody field to her advantage, sliding in low, sometimes in a bow stance and other times dropping into a split. One time, as she dived in and pushed her sword into the belly of another demon, she caught a glimpse of the commotion from the back of the demon line. The girl could only see the man’s feet as she peered between the legs of several demons. Despite her obstructed view, what she saw was beyond belief. She thought to herself, I’ve only seen one man move that fast. I must be imagining things.
